Locks, Lights, and Cameras + Is that vehicle stolen?

Posted on November 10, 2022 under: Announcements

Lots of useful information at the RCMP Open House in Empress.  Here are a few things, but certainly not everything.

  • Look out for your neighbourhood.  If you see something strange or suspicious, call the RCMP.  Make that call before you post about it online.
  • If you see something/someone unfamiliar, learn more.  Chat them up.  Maybe they are new to Empress and a future best friend.  Or maybe they will be someone nefarious, and will then learn that strangers in our community get noticed.  Or someone in-between, like a tourist or someone lost wondering where the H311 they are!  It doesn’t hurt to be friendly.
  • Get details.  A description like “a white pickup”, will not help much.  Get the license plate number, a company name, description of the people, anything that can help.
  • Lock up your stuff: Vehicle, house, shed, sea-can, barn, etc.
  • Don’t leave your keys in the vehicle.
  • Check your unattended properties.
  • Set up motion sensor lights.
  • Set up security cameras.
Criminals will look for easy targets, so locks, lights, and cameras can dissuade them from your property.

If you ever question whether a vehicle or trailer is stolen, you can enter the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number), on the CPIC (Canadian Police Information Centre), website.  That website will tell you if it is stolen or not.  If all you have is a license plate number, you can call the RCMP and ask them.
