Property Taxes
2024: The millrate was set in the 2024-02 Tax Rate Bylaw. If you have not yet paid your 2024 Property Taxes, please Contact the Village office.
Each year, the Village of Empress Council passes a Tax Millrate Bylaw in the spring, then mails out the Combined Assessment and Property Tax Notice to property owners by May 1. Taxes may be paid by Cash, Cheque, Debit, Credit Card, or Interac e-Transfer. See our Bill Payments webpage. The taxes are due by June 30. If the taxes are not paid by that date, a penalty of 10% is added. If taxes are still not paid by December 31, another 10% penalty is added. See 2023-02 Property Tax Penalties Bylaw. |

If a property owner has an issue with the tax rate, then they should examine the Village’s Financial Statements and the Budget. They might also find useful the information provided by the Alberta Government of the Municipal Tax Rates by Municipality.
If a property owner has an issue with their Assessment, then they should first contact the Assessor:

Assessment Consultant

Fax: 403-381-1596

If the issue remains unresolved after that, then the property owner may fill out a Assessment Review Board Complaint and submit it to the Village of Empress office. Such complaints must be received before the taxes are due, and the taxes still must be paid before the deadline. If any adjustments get made to the Assessment, any differences in the taxes paid will be handled afterward.
