The Village of Empress

is nestled between the Red Deer River and the South Saskatchewan River, at the eastern edge of Alberta. There is a wild feel to this quaint village surrounded by expansive farms and ranches, pronghorns, coyotes and so many different species of birds. Dogs

Posted on January 23, 2023 under: Announcements

The Village of Empress politely requests that residents/dog owners be courteous and considerate and pick up after their dogs and always keep them on a lease when walking them or having your dog(s) off your property.  Please be mindful of seniors, minors and others using our streets for walking and other purposes.  Please do not have your dog be a liability or a threat to others.  Keep your dog on a leash when others are passing or approaching.  Be respectful of early and late hours, and those working shifts, so your dog(s) does not bark excessively.  Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Regular Council Meetings date & time

Posted on January 19, 2023 under: Announcements

More information is available here.

Electricity

Posted on January 18, 2023 under: Announcements

Here it is, 3:00 pm, and the electricity is back on again. Who knows for how long.

If/when the power goes out again, the Empress Friendship Centre (324 Centre Street), will be open for people seeking warmth.

The Village Office has a backup generator, so is open, but when the power is off, so is our Internet. That means that office and banking transactions can not be done when we have no Internet.

The Regular Council Meeting will go ahead tonight but business is priority, and the general idea is to get it done and move on so to speak.

The Village appreciate your patience on the matter and has raised the infrastructure concern with ATCO which they have acknowledged.

Oyen Hospital

Starting Jan. 16, Big Country Hospital in Oyen will be closing their acute care beds and the Emergency Department will close at night.  It is a temporary measure until they can get more nurses.

See: Link to Alberta Health Services News Release

On 2023-Jan-12, Alberta Health Services had a very well attended public meeting in Oyen wherein they explained what is happening and then took questions from the public.  Video of that meeting is available online on Facebook and the Oyen Echo website, thanks to the Oyen Echo.  Skip to 8:35 in the video for the start of the meeting.
